The team behind innovative projects ranging from the inflatable car jack to security blinds, spider catchers and new manufacturing management procedures has been recognised as a UK centre of expertise in manufacturing by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI).

Sceptre, which is part of the School of Engineering at Sheffield Hallam University, has been recognised for its work in product and prototype design and development.

The DTI is developing a national network of centres of expertise.

These centres are able to offer in-depth specialist services that are tailored to the needs of individual client companies, giving the advice and support manufacturers need to drive their business ahead and dramatically improve their performance.

The Sceptre team offer local companies and individuals professional assistance with product and process innovations from concept through prototype stages to final production and marketing.

Expertise is also available to companies in the development and implementation of manufacturing processes and information systems.

David Eaton, Director of the School of Engineering said: "Becoming a centre of expertise in manufacturing is the latest accomplishment in our long standing record of providing support and specialist expertise to manufacturing and engineering companies within the region.

It also confirms the quality of the service we offer to our clients, whether they be company startups or established national and international firms.

Here at Hallam we have both the expertise and the facilities to back that knowledge up", he added.

The team have completed more than 2500 projects for clients over the past 15 years, ranging from an innovative window opening mechanism and portable train weighing equipment, to electronic water management systems and the design and implementation of new management information systems.

The school also offers expertise in other areas of modern manufacturing management including; computer modelling and simulation, lean manufacturing, the integration of physical processes with business process, operations management, business process modelling, quality systems and automation.
