The team behind projects ranging from the inflatable car jack to spider catchers and new manufacturing management procedures has been recognised as a UK centre of expertise in manufacturing.
The challenge was that no drawings existed for the original exhibit, and so with the help of Hallam's engineers detailed measurements of the original were taken at the museum outside of opening hours, before new technical drawings were produced.
The exhibit, known as the Grain Pit, comprises a series of conveyors, tubes, elevators and lifting devices which children can operate to move grain along a "production line".
Since its installation in the store, the Grain Pit has proven the star attraction of the activity area.
News of its success has spread overseas to the extent that AIVAF is now producing another example of the exhibit for an organisation in the USA, who will be using it as the showpiece in a new centre opening this May.
