An educational project designed to raise awareness about renewable energy technologies in the UK climate is the latest beneficiary of support from the Sheffield Hallam University product development team and the DTI's Grant for Research and Development scheme (formerly the Smart scheme).

The Schools and Homes Energy Education Project, based at the Sheffield Science Park, has secured a GBP 15,000 grant to develop solar electric, remotely controlled model boat kits that teach school children about basic engineering, electronics, science and design and technology, while demonstrating the role of engineering in providing solutions to achieving sustainability.

The money will be used to develop designs and prototype components for testing and trials of the new catamaran.

This is the latest example of companies that have successfully obtained funding from the DTI, to exploit their product ideas with the assistance of Hallam's product development experts.

Previous clients that have benefited from this support have included: Lite-Lift, with its stables fork; Security Blinds, for its window security product; and Keith Barraclough who has developed an anti-motorcycle barrier.

Tim Jones from the product development team comments: "The Grants for Research and Development, and the Smart grants before them are a very good way to help individuals and companies develop an innovative idea they have, solving any technical problems on the way to getting the idea ready to be sold to customers".

The product development team have extensive experience of advising clients on making the grant applications and also helping clients undertake the development work once the grant has been received.
