Sensor Technology has developed a new wide-angle contactless rotary sensor for harsh environments

Sensor Technology has developed a new wide-angle contactless rotary sensor for harsh environments and application according to RTCA/DO-160D.

The Model VHX-160-EL contactless rotary sensor combines a CMOS Hall circuit with a ferromagnetic disk.

The CMOS circuit embodies two couples of Hall sensors for each direction parallel to x and y surfaces, together with offset-deleting and amplifying circuitry.

This design results in a peculiarly stable thermal behaviour and low noise.

Its main features include a linear range from 0 to 160 degrees, voltage input from 13 to 16V and output from 0 to 10V, resolution of 0.03 degrees and linearity of 0.7 degrees (to 160 degrees) or 0.3 degrees (to 120 degrees).

The R and D phase was conducted with the aim of creating a high level product not only from the strictly electrical point of view but also in terms of mechanical performance.

The Model VHX-160-EL has an anodised aluminium case with a 6mm shaft secured on a couple of shielded ball bearings; this mounting results in a dynamic torque of 0.15Ncm and a starting torque of 0.25Ncm, allowing continuous rotation over a 360 degree angle at speeds up to 6000rev/min.

Case sealing is IP54, and protection IP67 is available on request.

This contactless rotary sensor is fully compatible with a wide set of applications ranging from industrial and automotive to naval and aircraft field.

The VHX-160-EL was designed with an eye to weight reduction (maximum weight is 70g), and features an MTBF higher than 300kh.

Tests show shock resistance according to MIL-STD-202 E213B) of 50g and vibration resistance (according to MIL-STD-202 E204C) of 20g (10 to 2000Hz).

Other environmental requirements, such as vibration, shock, altitude, humidity, radiated/conducted emission, H-field immunity have been tested according to RTCA/DO-160D (sections 8, 7, 4, 6, 21 and 19).
