Vision sensor takes pattern recognition onboard

A Sensopart UK product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Jul 10, 2003

A novel highly compact vision sensor with complete "onboard" processing can, in many instances, replace applications that would have previously required a vision system approach.

Vision systems have always been at the expensive end of optical-based sensing solutions.

Despite this, in many cases designers have been forced to use vision solutions because the additional fixture costs to orientate a product for detection with standard optical sensors has been cost prohibitive or just plain impossible.

Sensopart has recognised for some time that the complexity of vision systems and the overspecification of their hardware does not represent economical use of installation time or capital cost to either the OEM or end customer.

As a direct response to one customer's requirements, Sensopart has developed and produced a new highly compact vision sensor with complete "onboard" processing.

In many instances it replaces applications that would have previously required a vision system approach: however, intelligent application of the new FA30 series resolves many these type of applications without the cost and complexity issues of a vision system.

The great advantages of the FA30 are twofold.

First, the highly compact design and housing has complete onboard processing.

All the processing algorithms, memories and signal processing are done within the M30 metal housing.

No extra interface or control boxes are required.

Secondly, the sensor works with easy-to-use software.

Most shop floor engineers will be able to program and use the system within 15min.

With the onboard white LED illumination the majority of applications can be resolved including applications with large changes in ambient and external lighting influences.

Current applications include sorting CD booklets by the language of the printed text, detecting correct orientation and positional tolerance of automotive part identification labels, recognising packaging identification numbers and detecting correct laser and inkjet coding operation.

It is wrong to think that this sensor is "just another" pixel counter.

The FA30 is far more advanced than that.

The sensor performs genuine pattern recognition with tolerance adjustment.

This enables the sensor to perform so quite remarkable applications for such a simple device.

The same sensor can also perform grey scale (pixel counting) detection and contrast detection.

Sensopart's FA30 development program continues to produce new variants of the system which include 2D data matrix reading, barcode reading and OCR.
