SGS certifies offshore wind-farm projects

A SGS SA - Industrial Services product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Feb 20, 2009

SGS is working with the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency, Bundesamt fur Seeschifffahrt und Hydrographie (BSH), to certify a number of offshore wind-farm projects in Germany.

These projects include Borkum West II, Gode Wind II, MEG I, Delta, Kriegers Flak, West and Albatros.

SGS's Wind Energy Competence Centre in Hamburg, Germany, carries out certification and inspection for onshore and offshore wind-energy life-cycle services.

The BSH is the agency that decides on the approval of offshore wind-farm development projects in the German North Sea and the Baltic Sea.

The BSH Expert Group's 'Design of Offshore Wind Turbines' standard, which specifies the requirements for offshore wind-turbine construction in Germany and ensures that all installations and structural components are certified, will be supported by SGS.

The BSH carries out the application procedure for wind farms in the German Exclusive Economic Zone where it is planned that most of the German offshore wind farms will be installed.

Part of this approval procedure is to examine whether all installations and structural components have been certified according to the BSH's standard.

This provides legal and planning security for development, design, implementation, operation and decommissioning of offshore wind farms within the ambit of the Marine Facilities Ordinance (SeeAnlV) and regulates the various structural components of an offshore wind farm that differ in terms of design.

BSH also called SGS to its Expert Group on further developing the 'Design of Offshore Wind Turbines' standard.
