Mobile robotic cameras inspect water systems

A SGS SA - Industrial Services product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Mar 6, 2009

For the quality control of water pipelines and drainage systems of industrial facilities or buildings, SGS uses 'tele-operated' equipment.

This consists of a camera mounted on a motorised vehicle and a portable control unit.

Problems identified by inspection with a robotic camera can be corrected in a new facility before the system becomes operational.

In this case, the owner can ensure that everything has been assembled correctly.

Robotic cameras are also useful devices for the regular inspection of facilities that are in use.

They can identify faults that other devices would not detect, and determine the size of cracks and flaws.

They inspect water-tightness, structural stability and 'liquid fluency', in order to avoid dangerous problems such as aquifer contamination, problems associated with adjacent water systems and infiltration of the common water supply.

The testing equipment is an axial camera, fully integrated into the vehicle.

The main part of this equipment is high-definition colour television with a wide- angle lens, which can be regulated between 2cm and 1cm.

The camera is equipped with integrated illumination, and has full-colour capability.

The control unit is the base of the portable inspection system, and has all the necessary components to drive the vehicle and the camera.

In a 10in monitor, the live image of the inspection camera can be seen.

The text generator offers inspection documentation, including all the flaws which could appear.

The vehicle and control unit are joined with a 200m winch length.

All this equipment is located in a van, to ease displacement in the facilities.

Once the inspection using the equipment and software is finished, the sizes of the cracks and flaws can be calculated.
