SGS offers radiography NDT service

A SGS SA - Industrial Services product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Mar 11, 2009

Radiography is a non-destructive test (NDT) method that uses X-ray and gamma-rays for detecting internal imperfections, measuring wall-thickness and detecting corrosion.

Radiography involves directing radioactive rays at an object to be inspected, with the image - resulting from the rays passing through the object - captured on a film.

This film is processed and the image is displayed as a sequence of grey shades between black and white.

With radiographic examination, the material is exposed to a homogenous ray from a radioactive isotope or an X-ray tube, while a negative film is positioned behind the material to be examined.

After development of the film, thickness and density differences (for example material imperfections) show as blackness differences.

Acceptance criteria define whether or not the indication is a defect or not.

Radiography encompasses sources such as X-rays, gamma rays, real-time radiography, computed radiography (CR) and computed tomography (CT).

One solution cannot meet all radiographic needs.

The right choice depends upon the application.

SGS can perform conventional and advanced NDT examinations around the world.

It can perform NDT examinations in: fabrication, pipe manufacturing, pipeline or plant construction, chemical or petrochemical plants, shipyards or offshore industry and in conventional and nuclear power plants.

SGS Industrial Services can also combine conventional radiography with other NDT methods.

SGS can carry out standard non-destructive testing services to advanced technologies such as risk-based inspections, guided wave inspection, time-of-flight diffraction, Corroscan, positive material identification, magnetic flux leakage or leak testing.

SGS also provides relevant NDT/NDE training courses in the SGS-NDT Training and Examination Centre or at clients' premises.

Experienced instructors share knowledge that complies with guidelines and local and international NDT/NDE standards, such as ASNT and EN 473.
