Corroscan precisely measures wall thickness

A SGS SA - Industrial Services product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Mar 11, 2009

Conventional manual ultrasonic inspection is the most reliable non-destructive testing (NDT) technique for measuring wall thickness.

But finding the exact location where the measurement was taken and the projected coverage of the measurements is difficult to report, which makes the reproducibility of these measurements poor.

Corroscan inspection is applied in situations where exact wall thickness measurements and monitoring is needed to ensure safe operation of the part under inspection.

The Corroscan system digitally stores wall thickness and measurement-location data.

This provides an overview of wall thickness patterns of pre-defined areas and allows the user to monitor these patterns in time with accurate and reproducible follow-up inspections.

Corroscan is an automated pulse-echo inspection that stores wall thickness measurement data together with positions, by means of a computer.

Using Corroscan to measure and monitor wall thickness has several advantages compared with using manual pulse-echo, such as: digital storage of measurement and location; digital storage of all system settings; good reproducibility; guaranteed 100 per cent coverage of the inspected area; and visualisation of wall thickness patterns using B-, C- and D-scan presentation in Corroscan reports.

The Corroscan system can be operated on a 12V battery as well as on 110 to 240V AC and is compact, making it suitable for inspections at most locations.

SGS's worldwide NDT services are integrated with asset integrity solutions and with its materials-testing laboratories.

The services seamlessly fit into SGS's supply chain services.

SGS's NDT services can be packaged around assets and production processes to be utilised when required.

Typical applications of Corroscan inspection include: pressure vessels as an alternative for radiography, tank bottoms and non-intrusive inspections for extending the time interval between intrusive inspections.

A Corroscan inspection provides a clear and comprehensive report.

All measurements taken are presented in C-scan (top view) by using a colour scale to symbolise wall thickness.

On places of interest, cross-sectional views (B- and D-scans) can provide an insight into wall-thickness reductions.

The report can be presented on paper and on CD-ROM.

SGS Industrial Services offers a corrosion-mapping service combined with other methods of non-destructive testing.
