SGS provides certification for machinery

A SGS SA - Industrial Services product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Apr 2, 2009

SGS is able to offer product approvals to manufacturers or importers of industrial machinery to position them in the international market.

In the European Union manufacturers and importers need to assure that equipment meets the requirements of the following directives: European Machinery Directive (98/37/EC); Low-Voltage Directive (06/95/EC); and EMC Directive (04/108/EC).

The compliance with these directives is generally obtained through the use of independent, third party testing organisations, such as SGS.

The manufacturer has to place a CE mark on its product and has to make sure that the equipment is accompanied by the proper documentation (EU-Type Test Certificate).

In North America, the CE mark is normally not accepted.

Any installation in this region may be subject to one or more additional federal, state and local installation requirements, or codes.

In other regions of the world, there are other local regulations that have to be followed.

SGS Industrial Services can develop a suitable conformity assessment procedure for equipment and its target market.

SGS verifies the design of machinery equipment and its safety components according to design codes.

The object of this service is to compare manufacturers design, drawings and specifications with the applicable codes, standards, purchase specification and statutory requirements.

The service includes operations to verify stress calculations, working drawings, equipment specifications, control systems and ability to be operated in accordance with intended use.

The object of the service is to carry out a series of tests and inspections to establish conformity.

The tests are carried out against a specification, code, directive or industry standard that will clearly identify the criteria for acceptance.

The service may include inspection, non-destructive and destructive tests.

Statutory inspection applies after complete or almost complete assembly/installation of the device and then at regular intervals thereafter.

Inspections can be carried out also after conversion, modification or modernisation of the equipment.

The typical inspections can include the complete inspection of the mechanical, structural, electrical and safety systems.

SGS can carry out combined statutory inspections, offering approval for more than one country with one inspection.

SGS Industrial Services provides independent witnessing of performance tests of such equipment to ascertain that guaranteed performance values are met.

The service may include verification of test reports for routine tests, witness test and a review of performance calculations.

Typical operations performed on the equipment include load testing and operational testing to reassure that the unit is functioning properly.
