Send to Ant SGS has signed a contract for construction supervision of the expansion of the Alumar aluminium and alumina refinery in Sao Luiz, Brazil.
With the expansion, Alumar aims to increase the production of alumina at the refinery from 1.5 million tons to 3.5 million tons a year.
SGS will conduct diverse commissioning, automation and electrical services and will place specialised human resources at Alumar's disposal.
Sao Luiz is located 3,000km away from the major industrialised areas of Brazil such as Sao Paulo or Rio de Janeiro, which means there is an acute shortage of qualified labour in the area.
In order to cover the necessities of this project, SGS has set up an operational base in Maranhao with almost 300 people, including calibration lab personnel, field staff and administrative support.
In less than one month, 200 experts and specialists were selected and hired.
Many of these experts had to move to the region, and needed SGS support to handle administrative tasks.
SGS is responsible for the identification of bottlenecks and the inspection of the electrical and automation works performed by the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor, as well as for the assembly of control instruments, the calibration and certification of these instruments, and finally for the commissioning of the plant for the owners.
The estimated completion date for the facility is August 2009.
This project could not have been carried out without the expertise of the former PiD Group, which was acquired by SGS in September 2008.
Through the integration of the PiD Group into SGS Industrial Services, SGS clients benefit from the professional competence of the Brazilian group, which specialises in valve calibration, maintenance, electrical assembly, testing, training and consultancy activities.
