A SGS SA - Industrial Services product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team May 28, 2009

SGS Industrial Services is supervising the reconstruction of the railway corridor between Piestany and Nove Mesto, Slovakia.

ZSR, the Slovak Railway Authority, awarded SGS Industrial Services and SG Geotechnika the contract for the technical supervision of the railway-corridor reconstruction.

The aims of the reconstruction are to modernise the technical infrastructure of the railway track to meet European standards, to connect the track to the rest of Europe's transport infrastructure and to increase the track speed-limit up to 160km/h.

This project is part of the overall modernisation of the TINA railway corridor Va.

This corridor runs from Bratislava to Tisou (Ukraine) and connects with corridor VI, which runs from Zilina through Warsaw to Gdansk along the Baltic Sea coast.

The reconstruction of the railway track will be completed by August 2009 and will cost EUR180m (GBP156.85m).

The project includes the modernisation of the entire rail sub base.

It also covers the construction of new rails, switches, gravel beds, 191 building objects, two railway bridges, two overpasses, six underpasses, passenger tunnels, noise barriers (7,475km), optical cables (24,810km) and the refurbishment of Piestany and Nove Mesto railway stations.

The construction of all platforms and objects will meet requirements for disabled people.

The construction supervision by SGS Industrial Services and SG Geotechnika will consist of 11 SGS representatives and three engineers from the International Federation of Consulting Engineers (FIDIC).

Depending on the phase of the project, it will involve experts on bridges, interlocking systems, trolley systems, track superstructures and sub-bases, utility lines, building structures, roads and financial control, as well as safety and quality engineers, surveyors, geodetics and geologists.

SGS construction supervision covers civil and construction works, mechanical and pipe systems, electricity and control.
