High-power batteries for rail
applications
A new brochure illustrates the SRX range of rechargeable nickel-cadmium rail batteries purpose designed to provide a reliable and maintenance free onboard power source for diesel locomotives.
A new brochure from Saft illustrates the SRX range of rechargeable nickel-cadmium rail batteries purpose designed to provide a reliable and maintenance free onboard power source for diesel engine starting, emergency braking, tilting and raising pantographs The SRX is a high power battery, developed specifically to deliver short duration high current discharges of up to one minute and up to five times its capacity, which makes it ideal for instantaneous starting of diesel engines

Unbiased battery comparison software!
Saft's new free software compares within seconds the suitability of different types of industrial batteries according to user-defined criteria - and it doesn't always recommend Saft's own batteries.
Credit Suisse changes to nickel-cadmium batteries
Credit Suisse Group, the global banking and insurance group, has become the first major bank to adopt nickel-cadmium (Ni-Cd) batteries to guarantee the power supply to critical computer systems.
Discharges of up to three times capacity for up to three minutes can also provide power for high speed train emergency braking.
The SRX operates over a wide temperature range, from -50 to +70C.
Even at -20C the SRX battery retains more than 70% capacity, and this avoids the need to oversize the battery while ensuring power availability at low temperatures.

Rechargeable Ni-Cd battery for onboard rail use
A new battery has been purpose designed to provide the perfect high performance on-board battery system for LRV, metro, EMU, locomotive and high speed rail systems
The SRX design features sintered positive and plastic-bonded negative electrodes which make it up to 40% smaller and lighter than conventional batteries of similar performance, an important consideration for modern rolling stock which places a key emphasis on low weight for maximum energy efficiency.
In addition it is extremely reliable, it does not suffer the "sudden death" failure that can afflict lead acid batteries, and can provide a long service life of up to 15 years.
This extended lifetime exceeds the minimum lifetime required by the UIC 854 R railway specification by more than six times.
A further advantage of the SRX for the train operators is that the battery will need no special attention between normal rolling stock maintenance examinations.
Topping up with distilled water is only required at two-year intervals, and there is no need to change the electrolyte during the battery's lifetime.
An optional centralised water filling system provides fast and accurate top-ups to further reduce maintenance costs SRX batteries can be supplied in a wide variety of containers.
These include steel containers in flame retardant plywood crates and flame retardant polyamide plastic containers in compact stainless steel crates.
Saft is also able to supply SRX batteries as part of a fully integrated, turn-key battery system in bespoke trays or battery boxes complete with isolators, fuses and connectors which are fully vibration and shock tested to the appropriate rail standards.
The Saft SRX steel range of batteries is available in blocks of two up to six cells, with rated capacities from 73 up to 375Ah.
The SRX plastic range is available in blocks of two up to 10 cells, with rated capacities from 22 up to 220Ah. Request a free brochure from Saft Industrial Batteries ...
