Batteries are selected for their robustness and reliability, length of life and maximum maintenance intervals.

Saft has signed an important contract with Lanco Infratech to provide backup power for the Nagarjuna thermal Power Plant at Udupi in Karnataka province in Southern India.

The high performance nickel-cadmium (NiCd) batteries will be manufactured at the Amco Saft India plant in Bangalore.

They have been selected for this demanding power backup function because of their characteristics in terms of robustness and reliability, length of life and maximum maintenance intervals.

With a value of 37.5 million rupees (approximately Eur 600,000) this contract represents the single largest order for this type of battery received by Amco Saft India.

Since its creation in 2006, the Bangalore plant has seen a number of technology and industrial investments to increase production capacity and to establish battery assembly capabilities for aviation and railway batteries.

The entity is thus benefiting from the Saft's Group world-wide leadership in the manufacture of NiCd battery solutions for the industrial and transport sectors.

"This prestigious order is a breakthrough for our Group in this important sector in the fast-growing Indian market", says Xavier Delacroix, Saft's Industrial Battery Group Director.

"It represents a major market for Saft where there is potential to significantly expand our existing client base".

In February 2006, Saft acquired a majority stake in Amco Power Systems based in Bangalore, the nickel-cadmium battery business of Amalgamations private.

The entity is now called Amco-Saft India and represents Saft's platform to bring state of the art technology to the Indian subcontinent market.

Saft is addressing the dynamic power, rail and aviation sectors which respond to the ever growing needs for energy and mobility of the Indian economy.
