Slideway oils improve accuracy

Shell Tonna oils contain additives to enhance their friction-reducing properties and their tackiness characteristics, as well as meet changing health and safety requirements.

Shell Lubricants has developed oils for use in machine tool slideways that help customers improve the precision of machining and the quality of finished work pieces, in addition to reducing maintenance costs The Shell Tonna oils (Shell Tonna S, Shell Tonna T and Shell Tonna V) are based on highly refined mineral oils and contain additives to enhance their friction-reducing properties and their tackiness characteristics, as well as meet changing health and safety requirements

Laurent Barnagaud, Global Marketing Manager for Shell Metalworking, says: "First and foremost, our customers demand precision".

"Addressing the issue of stick-slip is no longer enough to satisfy the demands of metalworking organisations".

"In an increasingly competitive market, customers also need a lubricant that will help achieve better machining accuracy".

"In developing the new Shell Tonna range we aim to provide our customers with lubricants that exceed the minimum requirements of the modern metalworking industry".

Shell Tonna S is designed to help metalworking companies achieve high levels of accuracy.

It is suitable for low-speed machines and has been formulated so that it can also be used in hydraulic pumps and to lubricate gears.

Shell Tonna T has an increased ability to separate from coolants, making maintenance easier as operators only need to remove the oil film off the top of the coolant bath.

It helps to reduce the breakdown of the emulsion, caused by the development of micro-organisms which occurs when the coolant becomes contaminated with a lubricant.

This in turn reduces maintenance requirements as the coolant bath does not need to be changed as regularly.

In addition, while coolants that are projected onto the tool under pressure can completely remove the oil film on the guide, leading to stick-slip movement and slideway wear, Shell Tonna T has been developed to resist this 'wash-out' effect, thereby reducing the amount of lubricant required and the associated costs.

Shell Tonna V is based on the same additive formula as Shell Tonna T, offering the same benefits to metalworking specialists.

However, Shell Tonna V has been designed with increased 'tackiness' which improves this lubricant's effectiveness on vertical slideways and in operations where high adherence properties are required.

Both Shell Tonna T and Shell Tonna V also benefit from a lighter odour than traditional slideway oils, thereby helping to improve working conditions within metalworking operations. Request a free brochure from Shell Lubricants ...
