Research has named Shell as selling more lubricants in 2008 than any other supplier in the world.

The research, conducted by Kline and Company, shows Shell Lubricants as having 13 per cent of the market by volume and a two per cent lead over its nearest competitor, despite a tough operating environment.

Shell also continued to increase its market share in the industrial sector.

David Pirret, executive vice-president for Shell Lubricants, said: 'Although industries across the world have been hit by the downturn, Kline's research shows that we have continued to gain volume and market share in spite of the challenging environment.

'This is testament to our continued focus on helping industrial customers increase productivity, reduce unscheduled downtime and save costs.' During 2008 the global market size for industrial lubricants remained the same at 14.9 million tonnes.

However, according to Kline, Shell Lubricants achieved volume growth of just over 5 per cent in 2008 in comparison to 2007.

Recent additions to Shell's industrial lubricants range include Shell Tellus EE, an energy-saving hydraulic oil.

Shell Tellus EE has been shown to help companies reduce the energy consumption of their hydraulic systems by an average of 8 per cent when compared to conventional mineral oils.

Shell has also launched a range of lubrication services.

The services, Shell LubeAdvisor, Shell LubeAnalyst, Shell LubeCoach and Shell LubeMatch, have been developed to enable companies to take a proactive and informed approach to lubrication management, from selecting the correct lubricant for an application through to monitoring to ensure potential problems are addressed before costly unscheduled downtime occurs.

Industrial customers across the world are benefiting from Shell's products.

Examples include civil engineering and construction company Corsan SA, which has achieved an estimated USD48,000 in savings made by switching to Shell Alvania EP2, a general-purpose extreme-pressure industrial grease.

A South American concrete supplier, UNICON, has achieved an estimated saving of USD46,000 by switching to a high-performance, heavy-duty diesel engine oil, Shell Rimula.
