Range of safety components specified for prepress

A Schmersal UK product story

On Fujifilm's Luxel P-9600 CTP platesetter, the elevator access door, used to load cassettes of printing plates, is protected with a safety relay, a locking solenoid and a flanged actuator

Fujifilm Electronic Imaging (FFEI), the manufacturer of innovative image input/output products for the electronic prepress industry, specifies Schmersal safety components to protect customer and service access points on its range of machines.

Among the most recent of FFEI's prepress solutions is the Luxel P-9600 CTP platesetter, developed at its state-of-the-art manufacturing plant in Peterborough, Fujifilm's only Graphic Arts Manufacturing facility based outside of Japan.

Among the components protected using Schmersal devices are a high-power laser device, a spinning mirror that rotates at 30,000rpm and other moving mechanisms - including an elevator moving a heavy load.

All need to be disabled and made safe if a door is opened.

The elevator access door, which is used to load cassettes of printing plates, is protected with a safety relay, a locking solenoid and a flanged actuator.

The door is locked shut while the system is operating.

Unlocking the door breaks the drive to the 3-phase elevator motor to ensure that it cannot move.

The four top covers and two side doors are protected with coded magnetic interlock switches, coded magnet actuators and shim plates.

The magnetic interlock switches fitted to each of the customer access doors feed into a safety relay, which continuously monitors the dual circuits.

If any door or cover is opened the laser and moving mechanisms are made safe.

Commenting on the specification of safety equipment, a spokesman for Fujifilm says Schmersal was chosen for its wide range, thorough documentation and good application support.

Schmersal's magnetic interlock switches and actuators are also used on the Luxel F-9000 imagesetter.
