Schmersal (UK) claims to offer the only range of EEx-certified explosion-proof switches in the UK that is specifically designed for machine guarding.

The unique 21-model range already meets the standards laid down by the new ATEX Directive that comes into effect from July 2003, which will require all explosion-proof products to comply, even if they are only intended for use in their country of origin.

The Schmersal range, which should be specified for use in areas where protection against the possibility of explosion is specified by the new directive, includes safety interlock guard switches; solenoid switches, position, pull-wire and foot switches; magnetic reed switches and emergency stop and pushbuttons.

The range is ideal for applications in the chemical and petrochemical industries and in food milling, woodworking and processing plants where fine dust can lead to explosions.

Units are available for Zone 0 applications covering areas where explosive atmospheres are permanent or present for extended periods; Zone 1 for areas with occasional explosive atmospheres; and Zone 2 where explosive atmospheres are rare or present for short periods.

EEx Certification ensures that the appropriate certificate of conformity has been issued for every device, based on the European Cenelec standard EN50014.
