"Machine safety in the European Community" is claimed to be the definitive guide for machine builders and operators, design engineers and safety officers.

Schmersal Safety Systems has published a 400-page hardback safety manual entitled "Machine safety in the European Community", which it says is the definitive guide for machine builders and operators, design engineers and safety officers The company stresses that, unlike most manufacturers' manuals that link safety practices to their products, this one does not represent Schmersal's views on safety, nor does it promote Schmersal products

17 authors, each a leading authority on machine safety in Europe, have contributed to the manual, which was commissioned by Schmersal to provide an independent guide to the very latest and best practices in man-machine interface.

Chapters cover: directives and technical guidelines; documentation; risk-related selection of protection and control devices; safety guards; emergency stop devices; safety in electrical design; safety in fluid engineering; tests; safety for special machines; and safety when purchasing machines.

To paraphrase Stefan Schmersal in his Preface (the only "Schmersal" page in the manual): "In the course of standards harmonisation in the EU our engineers found a demand for information from machine manufacturers and users, so we decided to help by offering a book on the subject".

The manual is priced at GBP 25 plus VAT, including post and packing, and can be obtained by sending a cheque for GBP 29.38 to Schmersal UK.
