ATEX-approved switches simplify compliance

Kemutec specifies Schmersal ATEX-approved switches for its powder processing equipment for the food and pharmaceutical industries.
Kemutec, a leading manufacturer of powder processing equipment for the food and pharmaceutical industries, produces a wide range of standard and custom-built sifters, mixers and size-reduction equipment at its factory in Cornwall.
For many installations, safety switches fitted to the equipment need to comply with dust Zone 21 or 22 atmospheres, also including some gas Zone 1 environments, and for these Kemutec specifies Schmersal ATEX-approved switches.
Commenting on the choice of Schmersal equipment, Kemutec's Senior Contract Engineer explains: "When the ATEX directive was first introduced we needed to satisfy customers' specifications for approved switches, but discovered that our other safety component supplier couldn't provide them".
"Schmersal seemed to be the only manufacturer with any suitable ATEX-approved switches".
"Our early ATEX certified machines were designed to accommodate these switches but since then Schmersal has expanded its range".
"This has now enabled us to achieve compliance with our existing machine designs".
"Only minimal modifications have been required".
Kemutec's Kek K300C, K500C, K650C and K800C cantilever sifter range is the latest to be fitted with Schmersal switches, which are specified for all access doors given ATEX applications.
Kemutec also complimented Schmersal on a full day's training on machine safety standards provided by safety applications manager Terry Reay, saying; "It was very thorough and provided our engineering staff with an update of current legislation and EN standards".
