Sensor keeps watch over two safety guards

A Schmersal UK product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Nov 18, 2005

A new noncontact safety sensor can be used to monitor the position of two sliding, hinged or removable safety guards.

Following the successful launch of its noncontact BNS/AES door guard system, machine safety specialist Schmersal has introduced the BNS 16 LR, a noncontact safety sensor that monitors the position of two sliding, hinged or removable safety guards.

The noncontact design of the BNS 16 LR means there is no mechanical wear to reduce product life; and its closed housing and insensitivity to soiling makes it ideal for hygienic applications or where high switching frequencies are required.

Commenting on its operation, Managing Director Terry Hayward explains that for an enabling signal to be given, the active zones on each side of the safety sensor must be actuated by the 16bit coded magnetic actuators, which can be flexibly installed to safety guards regardless of local conditions.

The BNS 16 LR is IP67-rated and, when used with an appropriate safety-monitoring module such as Schmersal's SRB/AES range, will achieve control category 4/PDF-M.

The safety sensor is suitable for concealed mounting under nonmagnetic materials.

Working surfaces and storage areas can be arranged without the need for dust-collecting edges or other cutouts or projections.
