Specialist lightning protection manufacturer PolyPhaser has developed a new application to protect trackside rail workers in Italy.

Specialist lightning protection manufacturer PolyPhaser has developed a new application to protect trackside rail workers in Italy During storms, landslides or even collisions, there is a risk of damaged high-power overhead cables being shorted to the coax input of communications equipment in the vicinity of maintenance and engineering staff

To prevent equipment becoming 'live', surge arrestors connected to a grounding network are used to dissipate dangerous current.

Similar to components used to block lightning surges on antenna lines for cellular base stations, PolyPhaser's DSX series filter is installed on RF and data inputs on communication equipment in the vicinity of the track.

The design of the component circuitry has been optimised to respond quickly to dangerous overvoltage, while allowing the communications systems to operate connected to their normal power supply.

The DSX surge product design and operation has been accepted by the Italian rail authorities, and is already installed protecting the lives of maintenance workers on many types of track including high-speed lines.

The filter series will no doubt have further success in other European rail markets.
