Sira has recently completed a dual product certification project on behalf of The Morley Electrical Engineering Company Ltd.

The project for the certification of a Shearer motor driver required both ATEX certification for the European market and Mining Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) approval for the American market.

Steve Otty, Sira's mining specialist, says "Morley was looking for local testing.

Shipping a 2-ton motor to the States was simply not practical and would mean slow certification which was likely to prove complex and expensive had modifications been required.

Through negotiation with MSHA we were able to arrange for the three-day test programme to be carried out at our facility in Chester, witnessed by an MSHA representative.

Costs and time-scales were kept to a minimum since we also certified the equipment to the European ATEX standard, running the same tests but with different gas and coal dust mixtures, during the same test period.

Morley was able to meet delivery to their customer which has subsequently led to eight further orders.".
