Sira has recently completed an ATEX certification project on behalf of Siemens Flow Instruments.
Cable glands certified in record time
Sira's Safety Compliance team and Peppers Cable Glands have worked together to bring Peppers' new range of barrier glands to the European market.
The project was divided into two phases, with a timescale of January 2002 to June 2003.
Phase one of the project was to train and prepare staff, while classifying areas and formulation an explosion protection document (EPD) for the entirety of Teeside Cast Products, incorporating the Redcar site.
Phase two of the project was to complete the same work that was carried out at the Redcar site, but in several different areas including: the Southbank coke ovens, the Redcar power station and the blast furnace.
In addition to this work, Corus Engineering Support completed drawings of all plant sites involved in the project and a subcontractor checked all the equipment within the newly classified zones.
A three-man team was initially sent in by Sira to complete a survey assessment of the Redcar Coke Ovens, with several other personnel then sent to continue the work.
Monthly update meetings were held with Corus to convert on-site assessment into plans and surveys for safety development.
There were several health and safety implications involved in working on the sites.
Work permits and site permits were required as well as a permit for each area that was covered under the project.
A hazardous induction list was completed along with a "five steps to risk assessment induction" and a site induction.
Four employees from Sira took the two 3 day courses to qualify to become safety passport supervisors.
Sira also carried out the assessment and training of staff during the project at Corus.
