Sira's new Safety Compliance Business has published a datasheet detailing the ATEX Directive 94/9/EC for non-electrical equipment in hazardous areas The datasheet is of immediate interest to manufacturers of equipment used on fixed offshore platforms, in petrochemical plants, mines, flour mills and other areas where a potentially explosive atmosphere may be present

The datasheet provides detailed information on the different aspects of the ATEX Directive such as the categories into which equipment is divided, the role of notified bodies within the certification and approval procedure, the requirements for the internal control of production and the protection concepts designed to counter ignition sources.

An example of the marking found on approved equipment is also provided.

In addition, the new datasheet clarifies the services offered specifically by Sira.

The ATEX Directive embodies the European requirements for equipment used in potentially explosive atmospheres, and became mandatory on 30th June 2003.

The Directive covers two phases: the equipment design phase and the production phase and it defines two types of certificates, which have to be issued by a notified body.

Technical documentation providing information such as a general description of the product is also needed for the internal control of production, which need not necessarily involve a notified body.

Sira however, can provide guidance and training in order to meet these requirements.
