Mike Shearman, General Manager of Sira's Safety Compliance business, has been re-elected Chairman of the European ATEX Notified Bodies Group (ExNBG) for a further two-year term.

Mike Shearman, General Manager of Sira's Safety Compliance business, has been re-elected Chairman of the European ATEX Notified Bodies Group (ExNBG) for a further two-year term.

The ExNBG is an independent group of all European bodies notified under the ATEX Directive, whose role is to ensure consistency of approach between notified bodies.

Papers written by this Group are presented to the ATEX Standing Committee in order to ensure transparency.

Sira hosted the first official UK meeting of UK notified bodies (UKExNB) in January 2003.

Most notified bodies were represented at the meeting, as well as DTI, UKAS, HSE and Sira.

The objective of the meeting was to set the standards for a consistent approach to product certification across the UK.

Commenting on his role as chairman of ExNBG, Mike Shearman says: "My goal as Chairman is to encourage full participation in technical discussions from all notified bodies to ensure a consistent approach to product certification throughout Europe and to maintain transparency of operation".

Shearman was appointed General Manager of Sira's new Safety Compliance business in October 2003.

Previously, he was the Ex Product Certification Manager of Sira Test and Certification.
