A three-year project to develop technology for monitoring vehicle performance and emissions has been approved by the government-backed Foresight Vehicle Link programme.

A three-year project to develop technology for monitoring vehicle performance and emissions has been approved by the government-backed Foresight Vehicle Link programme It aims to develop and apply advanced environmental monitoring, position sensing and communications technology to demonstrate a vehicle performance and emissions monitoring system (VPEMS)

The system will appeal particularly to environmentally aware commercial fleet operators, city bus operators and commercial vehicle operators, where monitoring driving style and engine condition can bring benefits in reduced fuel consumption and maintenance costs, as well as limiting emissions to the environment.

A consortium of two industrial organisations, consisting of Sira and Saturn Technologies, has been set up for the project, together with Imperial College London.

The goal is to develop a prototype in-vehicle performance monitor, emission sensor and data transmission system.

Once built and tested in limited field trials the data collected will be used to demonstrate the system's applicability in transport and environmental modelling and to support the study of health risks from exposure to emissions.

Dr Andrew Crookell, Sira's Programme Manager, commented: "This system will help us to perform rapid environmental audits to understand where and when pollution hot-spots occur in our towns and cities." It will also help reduce emissions and provide a warning when drivers' concentration might become impaired from build-ups of emissions such as carbon monoxide inside their cabs.

Sira will be using its extensive expertise in designing advanced instrumentation to develop the emissions sensor module.

It will combine a variety of sensor technologies within a single unit to sample both exhaust emissions and cabin air quality.

The technologies under consideration will include electrochemical sensors, optical light scattering techniques and infrared methods.

The research and technology organisation will also help analyse experimental data to establish the minimum number of sensors required in a commercial version, so that the cost of the system can be kept as low as possible.

The Foresight Vehicle Link programme is focal point for UK government funded automotive research, and is sponsored by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and the Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions (DETR).
