Sira's laser safety training courses are being recommended as the best way to keep fully abreast of imminent regulatory and standards changes such as EN12626 (ISO 11553)

The only way scientists and engineers responsible for designing or using laser equipment can keep fully abreast of imminent regulatory and standards changes is to attend Sira's laser safety training course, according to Dr Mike Green, of Pro Laser "Continuing technical developments coupled with the introduction of more demanding European-wide safety standards makes it imperative that those people responsible for laser safety know the potential hazards and are aware of the latest regulatory requirements," he says

All previous laser safety standards have now been withdrawn with the exception of EN60825-1 (1994), which is mandated under the European Commission's Low-Voltage Directive.

This change happened at the beginning of 1998, with the introduction of Amendment 11.

Meanwhile, a new European standard, EN12626 (ISO 11553), has been published which sets specific requirements for laser machines, defined as laser products designed for processing materials.

Radiation safety requirements for this equipment are covered by EN60825-1.

A European standard for laser screens and guards is also in the pipeline and its contents will be of interest to safety and designated laser safety officers as well as scientists and engineers using and testing laser equipment in laboratories, general engineering and defence establishments.

By considering safety procedures in the context of best practice, Sira's laser safety course will examine the practical measures that can be taken by both manufacturers and users of laser equipment to discharge their health and safety responsibilities.

Open discussion sessions will deal with a range of real-life problems in metrology and civil engineering; in research, teaching and development laboratories, and in using semiconductor lasers.

The discussion session will also look at cutting, welding, drilling and printing operations in general industry and engineering.

These operations use high-powered laser machines, which are also within the scope of the European Commission's Machinery Directive.

The lecturing team comprises Dr Mike Green, who is currently convenor of the IEC international working group dealing with high-power laser safety and Mike Barrett, both of Pro Laser.

The Laser Safety in Industry and the Laboratory, one-day training course, 27 September 2001 at the Bromley Court Hotel, Bromley, Kent.
