Course promotes visualisation of data
Practical guidance in the effective visualisation of data will be provided by a new one-day course.
Practical guidance in the effective visualisation of data will be provided by a new Sira course As part of the DTI's National Measurement System (NMS) Software Support for Metrology Programme, the course has been developed with the National Physical Laboratory and the Numerical Algorithms Group (NAG)

The prevalence of computer models, automatic data acquisition and powerful processing are making it easier than ever to handle large quantities of data.
With the standard desktop computer now having good graphics capability and visualisation tools being readily available, the graphical analysis and presentation of data is now more accessible than ever.
However, it can be difficult to ensure that the benefits of visualisation are realised.
While it can be straightforward to display data in two or three dimensions, it is often less clear how to display more complex data sets and data together with measurement uncertainties.
The course will help participants understand what visualisation can do and how to apply it.
A particular emphasis of the course is ensuring that the algorithms used for the visualisation do not mislead the user.
The course is based around the use of Excel, Matlab and Iris Explorer but is focused on the generic principles of visualisation that can be used in any context.
Designed for metrologists and others with measurement data, the course is particularly suited to people whose data is physically based and who are interested in maintaining accuracy in visualisation.
The course will also be useful to people who need to gain a good understanding of other types of data.
Participants will receive a copy of the "Good practice guide in visualisation for metrology".
The one-day "Visualisation of data" course will be held on 11th June 2003 at The National Physical Laboratory, Teddington, Middlesex.
