Sira President Professor Richard Anthony Brook has been awarded an OBE in this year's honours list.

Sira President Professor Richard Anthony Brook has been awarded an OBE in this year's honours list.

Since his appointment, Professor Brook has ensured that Sira's name is synonymous with cutting-edge technological innovation.

Under Professor Brook's guidance, Sira has achieved many successes, partnering with both industry and the research base to apply emerging technologies to profit its clients.

Sira's team of entrepreneurs and innovators specialise in creating products, solutions and services to meet practical challenges in the biomedical, defence and security, environmental, safety compliance, instrument test and calibration, and space markets.

In the space market, Sira recently developed a compact high resolution imaging spectrometer (CHRIS), which is currently orbiting the Earth.

This low cost sensor is delivering hyperspectral Earth observation imagery to research groups around the world.

CHRIS has an expanding portfolio of social and economic uses - agricultural mapping, water quality monitoring, coastal watch and disaster management surveillance - as well as defence and security applications.

It is this type of innovation that has led Professor Brook to become the Chairman of the UK Industrial Space Committee and a member of the Space Strategy Council.

Professor Brook has many wider interests, as President of the Association of Independent Research Technology Organisations (AIRTO), a member of the Knowledge Transfer and Emerging Technologies Working Groups of the National Measurement System, a founder and director of venture capital firm E-Synergy and a non-executive director of the National Physical Laboratory.

With degrees in mathematics, physics and computer science from Bristol and London Universities, he is a chartered engineer, a chartered mathematician and a fellow of both the Institution of Electrical Engineers and the Institute of Measurement and Control.

He holds an honorary doctorate in engineering from City University, where he is visiting Professor of Measurement and Instrumentation.

"It's marvellous to be recognised in this manner", said Professor Brook.

"It reflects well on the Government's acknowledgement of the importance of space programmes to civil, commercial and military capabilities, as well as its appreciation of companies, like Sira, stimulating prosperity in the UK through technological innovation".
