Personnel certification scheme launched
Competence Professional is the only UKAS-accredited certification scheme to assess the competence of individuals working in or associated with hazardous areas.
The UKAS-accredited personnel certification scheme, Competence Professional, has been officially launched at two recent events in Bolton and Wolverhampton The scheme (operated by Sira Certification Service) is the only UKAS-accredited certification scheme to assess the competence of individuals working in or associated with hazardous areas

Vapour recovery assessment scheme launched
Sira has developed an assessment scheme to help installers avoid the pitfalls of retro-fitting of vapour recovery systems.
The launch brought together over 80 hazardous area engineers, compliance directors, training managers and industry consultants to learn more about the scheme, with key contributions from the HSE and NICEIC.
A number of awards were also presented to those who have achieved competence, including Dave Havell of McIntyre Group, Leigh Bates of Birmingham University and Ian Cross of Nomenca , who were one of the first to undertake the scheme.
Sira lecturers David Holton, Stewart Finch and Paul Reeve also received Competence Awards (Expert level) allowing them to deliver training for the scheme.
There has been an increasing call from all sides of industry for professionals working in hazardous areas to demonstrate competence to carry out their tasks.
New regulations now stipulate a requirement for people in certain safety-related activities to be competent in the field of explosion protection through experience and professional training.
The scheme assesses two important areas - knowledge and experience.
A formal assessment of a delegate's knowledge coupled with a satisfactory review of a work experience journal results in the issue of a competence certificate.
