Tiny logger records temperature even under water

A new fully submersible, miniature stainless steel high temperature data logger opens up exciting possibilities for temperature recording.

Signatrol is introducing the SL53 series of fully submersible, miniature stainless steel high temperature data loggers.

The company believes that the SL53 logger, measuring not much bigger than a watch battery, opens up exciting possibilities for temperature data logging, hitherto not possible because of size, temperature range and sealing constraints.

The self-contained SL53 has a temperature measuring range from to 0 to +125C and can operate continually at depths up to 1m, setting it apart from competing so-called waterproof units.

Sampling frequency is programmable from 1 second to 24 hours and the unit can be set up to record either 4000 temperature readings in high resolution mode (11bit or 0.0625C) or 8000 readings in low resolution (8bit or 0.5C) mode, with an accuracy of better than 0.5C over a 50C range.

The combination of small size, high temperature and sealing makes the SL53 ideal for use in a wide range of applications, especially in the food and beverage, and pharmaceutical industries.

The loggers are small enough to fit inside glass bottles and food packs, and units are already being used in areas as diverse as vinegar distillation, cutlery washing and chocolate manufacture.

Setup and data download is achieved simply and quickly using the SL53 button reader, which interfaces to the RS232 or USB port of a PC.

Sampling rates can be set from 1s to 24h and the built-in battery can power the logger for up to 10 years or one million readings, depending on the application.

The reader is totally compatible with Signatrol's universal TempIT-lite operating software which can be downloaded free of charge from the company's website.

The SL53 is easily set up to record in a continuous first-in/first-out or stop-when-full mode, and data can be securely stored and retrieved at a later time for display in graphical format.

The software can be upgraded to TempIT-Pro which provides important additional features such as data table, export data, email graphs, snap to trace, and automated MKT (mean kinetic temperature) calculations.

The TempIT Software is a single package that is used to set up all Signatrol's data loggers and enables different types of logger to be seamlessly integrated for different applications.

Each unit has the capability of storing specific manifest details and features a unique serial number etched into the base for traceability purposes.

The delayed start facility of up to 45 days allows the logger to be programmed to commence with a particular process or transport schedule.

Alternatively it can be set to start logging when triggered by an event, for instance, when a particular temperature threshold is exceeded.
