Siemens Automation and Drives has worked with specialist newspaper industry machinery supplier PPSI to develop an innovative folder for newspaper presses.

Siemens Automation and Drives has worked with specialist newspaper industry machinery supplier PPSI to develop an innovative folder for newspaper presses Cementing a partnership between the two companies, the development of the machine saw PPSI handing over responsibility to Siemens for design of the complete control system, with Siemens able to draw on the expertise of the specialist engineering team at its Centre of Competence for printing in Mannheim, Germany

PPSI has served the newspaper industry since 1968, and has built an enviable reputation for developing new and innovative products, from inking systems and shaftless towers to complete presses.

When the company looked to design a new machine for folding newspapers, it turned to Siemens not simply to supply the control products, but to develop a complete control strategy, including writing all the required software.

The project to develop the control system was managed from Siemens' UK engineering base in Manchester.

Pooling its core expertise in automation of production machinery with the knowledge of PPSI's engineers and the specialist capabilities of the Mannheim Centre of Competence, the team developed an integrated control solution that married highly effective software with state-of-the-art shaftless technology.

Siemens has a number of Centres of Competence around the world, each providing a knowledge hub for a particular industry.

The Centre of Competence for the printing industry was established in Mannheim in 2000 to develop new systems and share the specialist knowledge that Siemens has gained over many years working with both manufacturers and end users in the printing sector.
