Industrial PCs turn to RFID duties
Mobile asset management company Trenstar is using new Simatic Microbox PCs from Siemens to track kegs on behalf of some of the UK's leading brewers.
The Box PC is available as a single unit for direct installation in the machine or the control cabinet and as a Simatic Panel PC 677.
This combined PC and operator unit can be ordered optionally with a 12", 15" or 19" front.
The features of the new Simatic Box PC 627 are scalable with a main memory expansion up to two gigabytes, hard disk drives up to 80GB, optical drives, 110-230V AC or 24V DC power supplies and the operating systems Windows 2000 or XP Professional said Siemens.
Two PCI interfaces, two Ethernet interfaces, one DVI-I interface and one Profibus interface are onboard, as well as four high-speed USB interfaces (USB 2.0) suitable for the connection of external mass memories such as USB memory sticks or portable DVD burners.
For higher system availability and data security, there is an optional RAID1 mirror disk system, supported by the onboard RAID controller, and the integral vibration-suppressed double hard disk module.
For especially compact solutions, such as in the control cabinet, the Box PC is installed in space saving 'portrait assembly'.
The Box PC has a compact flash drive slot, easily accessible from the outside, for operation without a hard disk, in low-maintenance, high-availability applications, for example, added the company.
