GSM module extends reach of signal columns

A Siemens Automation and Drives product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Aug 18, 2006

Novel GSM module for Sirius 8WD44 signal columns sends either standard or bespoke SMS text messages to a mobile phone or can even make a call to a landline.

The long-distance visibility provided by signal columns is ideal for communicating current system status, especially when plant operators and maintenance engineers have many processes or machines to monitor.

However, traditional audiovisual elements tend to rely on the operator staying within sight or earshot, which can be impractical when locations are spread over a wide area or during out-of-hours operation.

The innovative wireless GSM module recently launched by Siemens Automation and Drives provides a convenient solution to this common issue.

The module is part of the Sirius 8WD44 range of signal columns, and can be quickly configured to send either standard or bespoke SMS text messages to a mobile phone or even make a call to a landline, depending on user requirements.

This means that personnel can be quickly called to the point of need without having to restrict their movement to the same room as the process or rely on notifications over public address systems.

This significantly reduces downtime, and has a direct resulting effect on productivity.

The module stores up to three phone numbers with individual user masks, ensuring that adequate business cover is given in critical situations (such as process stoppage), while still preventing plant managers receiving "nuisance" texts if signals relate to routine operation.

The Sirius 8WD44 module is easily configured, especially in retrofit applications, and requires no complex wiring or programming, nor any changes to PLC hardware.

This allows the Sirius 8WD44 GSM modules to be used to monitor as many or as few processes in a manufacturing location as are necessary.

It's a flexible system that is scalable to the needs of the user, so that it can monitor whichever machines are currently under observation.
