Industrial safety experts at Siemens Automation and Drives have produced a brochure to provide an overview of the fundamentals of ATEX legislation.

Industrial safety experts at Siemens Automation and Drives have produced a brochure to provide an overview of the fundamentals of ATEX legislation.

The document, which is available online or in hard copy format, provides readers with a clear interpretation of the legislation in conjunction with electrical equipment and systems.

Across many industries, the manufacture, processing, transport or storage of combustible materials can result in the formation of gases, vapours or combustible dust.

This can form an explosive atmosphere when in contact with the oxygen in the air, and result in an explosion if ignited - which has the potential to cause serious damage to both personnel and equipment.

Such hazards are particularly significant in areas such as the chemical and petrochemical industries, the transport of crude oil and natural gas, and the mining and milling (eg grain and granular solids) industries.

To guarantee the highest possible level of safety in these areas, most countries have developed appropriate obligations in the form of legislation, regulations and standards.

In the course of globalisation, significant progress has been made towards harmonising these guidelines across different nations.

For example, European Union Directive 94/9/EU creates the prerequisites for complete standardisation in Europe, as all new devices must be approved in accordance with this directive since July 2003.

The planning and installation of electrical systems therefore requires intensive study of the relevant guidelines.

However, Siemens has developed a brochure in order to provide users and interested readers with an overview of explosion protection in conjunction with electrical equipment and systems.

The "Explosion protection (ATEX) fundamentals" brochure also helps users to understand the labels on electrical devices.
