The latest digital pressure transmitter in the Sitrans range is the first to incorporate a Profisafe PA driver and SIL compliance, according to IEC61508/61511, in one instrument.

Siemens has added a digital pressure transmitter to its Sitrans range, which for the first time supplies a Profisafe PA driver and SIL compliance, according to IEC61508/61511, in one instrument The new transmitter, the Sitrans P DSIII ProfiSafe, can be used to measure gauge pressure, absolute pressure, differential pressure, flow and level

It is the first Profibus PA instrument that can be used for safety shutdowns to SIL2 level.

The Sitrans P DSIII is highly accurate to within 0.075% and can be used in a range of safety critical applications, most notably sectors such as oil and gas, petrochemical and chemical.

The main advantage of Profisafe is that the Profibus PA communication channel becomes secured by a protocol in a transparent way.

Incorrect values cannot be transferred to the master without being discovered.

Users do not require any special network components, only standard Profibus PA network components.

Mark McCormick, Product Manager - Pressure, Temperature and Profibus Instruments at Siemens Automation and Drives, comments: "For the first time it is possible to use Profibus PA and SIL in one instrument offering end users with safety critical applications an alternative to analogue instruments - in effect future-proofing their instrumentation against the inevitable superseding of analogue SIL devices".
