Model rig shows efficiency of helical bevel gears

A Siemens Automation and Drives product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Jan 27, 2009

Siemens Automation and Drive Technologies has built a demonstration rig that compares helical bevel geared motors with helical worm gear units.

Geared motor units of a similar size can vary in performance if the internal gearing is different.

Siemens' latest generation of motors with Flender gearboxes is highly efficient.

Helical worm gear-unit designs are typically 70 per cent to 80 per cent efficient, whereas newer helical bevel gear types have up to 96 per cent efficiency.

These parts are used in the processing, baggage handling, food and beverage, pharmaceutical, chemical, packaging and printing industries.

The demonstration rig can evaluate geared motor sizes of various power outputs.

It will be on show at the Siemens 'Answers for Industry - Automation Experience 2009' event at Coventry's Ricoh Arena from 25-26 March.
