Against the backdrop of doom and gloom being depicted by industrial soothsayers, Cambridgeshire-based Shearline Engineering enjoys reaching its 30th anniversary in bullish mood.

In celebrating its 30th anniversary this month, Cambridgeshire-based Shearline Engineering is better qualified than most other local businesses to comment upon the challenges to be faced and overcome before reaching such a milestone.

Chairman David Littlechild reflects: "Right from the beginning our philosophy was to focus upon quality above all else; not just in the work we produced but also in the staff employed and the environment we all work in".

This philosophy can be seen in reality by any visitor to the ultramodern Ely complex occupied by Shearline; a reception area that contains a Koi carp pool, air conditioning throughout the shopfloor and offices, working methods that centre on continual improvement, the list goes on and on.

Shearline has built an enviable reputation amongst its peer engineering companies and today it is regarded as a provider of "total manufacturing solutions" working for a variety of clients who themselves operate in markets as diverse as scientific and medical, information and communications technology, security, automotive and inkjet printing.

David Littlechild acknowledges the value of its workforce: "People have underpinned every step of our growth and our success at recruiting, training and retaining key personnel has created a unique pool of expertise unmatched at other engineering companies".

Looking to the future, Shearline has reinforced its management team with key appointments and one of the recent newcomers has been Robert Halpin who has taken on the role of Business Development Manager: "Engineering companies seldom occupy the spotlight; unless you are an engineer it can be hard to appreciate the combination of skills that result in a small component being produced in great volumes, yet each one to the same exacting tolerances.

But that is precisely the challenge that keeps us driving forward".
