Extension to house laser acquisition

A Shearline Precision Engineering product story

Construction has begun on an extension to Shearline Precision Engineering's existing showcase facility in Ely, Cambridgeshire.

Construction has now begun on a new (GBP 1 million) extension to Shearline Precision Engineering's existing showcase facility in Ely, Cambridgeshire, to accommodate Hybrid Laser Tech, the precision laser cutting company it acquired last year.

A turf cutting ceremony was held on 21st September where the Mayor of Ely, John Ison, cut the first piece of earth to mark the start of construction.

Representatives from EEF, Ely Rotary Club, MARS Construction, Barclays Bank and several Shearline customers and partners attended the event, which included a presentation and tour of Shearline's current 5300m2 premises.

The new building, a 930m2, two-storey custom built construction, is due to be completed in the Spring of 2007, and will feature a number of state-of-the-art environmental features such as rain water collection and usage, and energy generated from wind power.

Linked to the current Shearline factory and becoming home to the latest CO2 laser systems used to cut and scribe ceramic substrates, plastics and acrylics, it will enable Hybrid Laser Tech to become an integral part of the company's total manufacturing solution offering for its customers.

Shearline Precision Engineering, which has been operating for over 30 years and employs over 160 staff, continues to grow when many industry commentators lament the downturn in UK manufacturing.

David Lonsdale, Sales and Marketing Manager, commented: "The acquisition of Hybrid Laser Tech last year represented the next step in our strategy to strengthen and extend the range of services we offer for the benefit of all our customers".

"We're delighted that, after all the planning, work is underway to create a custom built home for the staff and equipment of our Hybrid Laser Tech operation, here in Ely with the rest of Shearline".

Lonsdale adds: "The additional capabilities that Hybrid Laser Tech offers, coupled with our recently launched international outsourcing facility, reinforces Shearline's strong position in the industry and ensures that we remain in a robust position in an increasingly competitive market".
