Price crash for 3D printer

A Stratasys product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Mar 9, 2005

The Dimension 3D Printing Group has reduced the price of its Dimension SST 3D printer by $5000.

The Dimension 3D Printing Group has reduced the price of its Dimension SST 3D printer will to $29,900, or $5000 less than its previous price.

The Dimension SST, which builds functional 3D parts out of durable ABS plastic, was launched in February 2004, following on the success of the organisation's Dimension BST 3D printer.

Dimension SST incorporates an automated soluble support removal system, which gives users greater convenience in the design process by reducing engineering time and enabling the development of prototypes with more complex design geometries.

Dimension SST and Dimension BST build functional 3D prints from the bottom-up, one layer at a time.

The software imports STL files and automatically slices and orients the part, creates necessary support structures and plots a precise deposition path for the 3D printer to follow.

Whereas the Dimension BST requires users to manually remove support pieces, Dimension SST provides a cleanstation that quickly and easily removes soluble supports, thereby enabling "hands-free" 3D printing.

The Dimension BST will continue to sell for $24,900.

Both products continue to be the most affordable 3D printers in the industry, selling for under $30,000 each, and incorporating many key features found in modelling systems that cost tens of thousands of dollars more.

"Our goal is to one day make 3D printers as common in engineering and design offices as laser printers and jet printers are today", said Jon Cobb, Vice President and General Manager of 3D Printing for Stratasys.

"Reducing the price of the Dimension SST will take us one step further in accomplishing this goal".

In addition to targeting traditional manufacturing markets such as aerospace, automotive and equipment, the Dimension 3D Printing Group has expanded the concept modelling marketplace, securing sales in new vertical industries including education, architecture, consumer products and packaging, and industrial design.
