Pancake stepper motors are down in price

A Servotechnic product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Apr 28, 2006

New manufacturing techniques at the HSI factory have allowed the company to reduce the price of its pancake stepper motors.

Servotechnic, the UK agent for Haydon Switch and Instrument (HSI), has reduced the price of the company's range of pancake stepper motors.

Investments in new manufacturing techniques at the HSI factory have resulted in reduced pricing making this product line even more attractive.

The 80000 series stepper motor is designed for applications where accurate positioning, high torque and very thin packaging are desirable characteristics.

This motor has a maximum diameter of 80mm and is less than 12.7mm thick.

Typical two-phase can stack stepper motors have two coils mounted alongside each other, requiring a certain minimum thickness.

This pancake motor features a unique patented design in which one coil is mounted inside the other.

The motor's permanent magnet rotor is a ring that is located in between the coils.

The motor comes as standard with a 12V winding, 3.75 degree step angle and 0.5A per phase.

Full step speed is up to 800 steps per second with torque up to 13Ncm.

Ramping can increase the performance further.

Haydon pancake stepper motors are also available with an integral planetary gear arrangement.

A slim profile is still maintained with thickness only increasing to approximately 20mm.

The gears are available in ratios of 4:1 and 6:1 with output torques up to a little under 90Ncm.

Applications for these products include business machines, laboratory equipment, computer peripherals and industrial robotics and automation.

Accommodations can also be made for configurations that require unipolar coils, special shafts and other mountings.
