Linear actuators boast fine resolution

A Servotechnic product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Nov 28, 2006

High resolution linear actuators offer extremely precise linear motion for demanding applications.

Haydon high resolution 36000 series linear actuators, available from UK agent Servotechnic, offer a full step linear resolution down to 3.2um.

Coupled with microstepping from a suitable drive this unit offers extremely precise linear motion for demanding applications.

The basic motor incorporates a threaded rotor in conjunction with a (lead screw) shaft to provide linear movement in two directions.

The linear step increments are controlled by the step angle of the motor and the leadscrew pitch.

The 36000 series high resolution actuator has a step angle of 3.75 degrees and can be supplied with linear resolutions of 3.2 or 6.4um per full step.

The unit is available in three variations: captive - incorporating an antirotation device and offering a virtually plug and play solution; noncaptive - incorporating a travelling screw with the need for the designer to prevent rotation of the screw in the application in order to achieve linear movement; and external linear - the load to be moved is attached to a travelling nut external to the motor.

The units are available as standard with 5 and 12V windings and antibacklash devices are also offered where backlash needs to be eliminated totally.

Linear thrust force is up to 80N at 100 full steps per second.

Applications for the actuators include office automation, precision dosing pumps, focusing devices and laboratory automation.

The full range of both can stack and hybrid linear stepper actuators are available from UK agent Servotechnic.
