Lithium cells assure swimming-pool safety

A Saft Lithium Battery Division product story

The Aquasensor is a life-saving swimming pool alarm device that is powered by solar panels and Saft lithium batteries.

Aquasensor is a life-saving device that helps swimming pool owners avoid their worst fears - children or nonswimmers falling in undetected.

Powered by solar panels and Saft lithium batteries the unit sounds an alarm the moment it detects an acoustic wave created by someone falling into a pool.

The device consists of a central detection unit powered by solar panels and two Saft LS-14500 primary cells.

It sits unobtrusively alongside a home swimming pool and can detect a body weighing as little as 5kg falling in.

The Saft batteries give Aquasensor a very long service life even without power from the solar panels.

According to Anthony Ginter, CEO of the manufacturer, MG International, Saft batteries were chosen because of their "reliability and Saft's reputation".

He adds: "In highly improbable conditions (such as total darkness for five to 10 years), the central unit would operate continuously", thanks to Saft's lithium batteries - and the fact that the unit is very energy efficient.

Indeed, according to Ginter, the theoretical life of the Saft primary lithium cells could be as long as 56 years.

Aquasensor is being actively marketed in a number of European countries.

Increasingly, national regulations are spurring owners to install a safety device.

In France, for example, as many as 50-100 children drown in swimming-pool accidents every year.

Aquasensor can detect a body weighing as little as 5kg - about the weight of a seven-month-old baby - falling into the water of a 6-12m long pool.

The detection technology works well even in an irregularly shaped pool.

The Aquasensor detector's sensitivity can easily be adjusted by the pool owner.

Public swimming pools - as well as municipal pools and water parks - can also use Aquasensor.

It will also detect intruders when a pool is closed or not under supervision.

Saft batteries are vital to Aquasensor's performance especially at night and in low light levels.
