Bearing sensor is accurate down to zero
speed

SKF now provides a sensor-bearing unit, using an active sensor principle, which functions like an incremental encoder to provide highly accurate measuring down to zero speed.

Clear information on the status of travelling machine parts is decisive in many fields of engineering, to enable reliable open loop and closed loop control of movements The importance of such information is highlighted still further with the increasing necessity of creating more lightweight, and simpler constructions

In light of these considerations, SKF now provides a sensor-bearing unit, using an active sensor principle, which functions like an incremental encoder to provide highly accurate measuring down to zero speed.

The SKF sensor-bearing unit consists of a deep groove ball bearing, with one seal, and an active sensor, which consists of an impulse ring, sensor body, and connecting cables, which forms an effective labyrinth seal on the other side of the bearing.

One of the principal features of the unit is its insensitivity to electromagnetic fields, which is essential for trouble free running.

This performance carried it through all the tests specified in European standard EN 50082-2:1995 and the unit also bears the CE mark.

The units can be used for recording the number of revolutions, speed, direction of rotation, relative position/counting, acceleration and deceleration.

The robust nature renders the units insensitive to vibration and high temperatures, which provides uniform output signals of high reliability and strength.

The compact design takes up hardly any more space than the bearings themselves and requires only standard tolerances and normal machining effort for the adjacent parts.

The standard range of the units covers a range of bore diameters from 15 to 45mm.

For simple installation and cost savings, the sensor-bearing units are supplied as ready to mount units, and are also lubricated for life and maintenance free.

Although they have their origins in the implementation of anti-locking brakes, bearings with integral sensors have spread to many other, non-automotive, fields of industry.

The SKF sensor-bearing units can control electric motors, linear actuators, steering systems and synchronise speed.

They find applications in vehicles, electric motors, gear units, conveying and handling systems, linear actuators, control units, escalator synchronization, elevator management and mechanical engineering.

The range of sensorised bearings available from SKF isn't limited to deep groove ball bearings.

Also available are wheel bearing units, for use in cars and trucks, bearing units with temperature sensors, for use in rail vehicles, and units for traction motors which can include insulation if required. Request a free brochure from SKF UK ...
