British high pressure die-caster Metal Castings has ordered a second Striko filter vessel for its Worcester foundry.

Like its predecessor - installed two years ago to filter liquid aluminium alloy from the plant's 3000/6000 reverbatory furnace - the new vessel will hold up to 350kg of metal.

It will be used in conjunction with a second bulk melter/holder to be commissioned at the beginning of 2003 to satisfy growing demand for the large automotive components in which Worcester specialises.

The design of the vessel, which was developed by Striko UK specifically for die casting, ensures that the whole flow passes through a filter plate of bonded silicon carbide grit - a more substantial barrier than the filter gauze that many foundries still use.

This prevents dross being carried over into the ladle that delivers metal to the dosing furnaces, which in Metal Castings' experience minimises secondary problems such as blocked riser tubes.

Striko's analysis of figures from the first vessel showed that the Metaullics filter plates it uses are both long-lasting and economical.

The plate on test lasted for six weeks, filtering more than 1000t of metal at a unit cost of just 53p.
