Flexibility for level transmitters

The new MSP900 and MSP400 ultrasonic level transmitters from Solartron Mobrey offer exceptional functionality in a rugged housing, for wide application in the process industry.

Key features include easy three button programming with no need for a separate hand-held unit, a handy relay for high/low level alarm and Atex approval.

The latest additions to the popular Solartron Mobrey MSP range, these two-wired loop powered 4-20mA instruments are equipped with digital Hart communications.

They can be used on their own and connected directly to a plant control or Scada system, or with the Solartron Mobrey MCU900 controller if a separate unit is required.

MSP900 is Atex certified intrinsically safe for use in hazardous areas.

MSP400 is designed for us in safe areas.

Both versions have an 11m operating range and measurement accuracy of +/-3mm.

There is a two-inch process connection on the front of the unit for easy mounting on a storage tank or process vessel, and the rugged glass-filled nylon housing has PVDF wet sides for wide chemical compatibility.

Like the other instruments in the MSP range, the new transmitters are programmed using a three-button key pad and LCD with a simple, intuitive menu system.

Operating range, relay set points and damping can all be programmed directly on the unit, or from a PC over a Hart network, so there is no need for a separate hand held unit.

This simplifies set up and maintenance, and reduces capital cost.

Tim Chettle of Solartron Mobrey explains: "Customers told us they are fed up with the number of different hand held programmers that, typically, they have to carry around with them in order to service all the instrumentation they may have on site.

So we have done away with the idea and incorporated local programming and Hart functionality into the unit.

It is simpler to use and cheaper to buy".

In addition to the 4-20mA connection, the MSP400 has two single throw signal relays - a fault alarm and a user-programmable high or low level alarm both powered by the instrument.

Although not recommended for critical high or low level process control, this handy, innovative feature will provide a useful additional check in applications such as stock levels in storage tanks and similar.

In common with all high quality ultrasonic level transmitters, MSP400 and MSP900 both have a built-in temperature sensor to compensate for changes in the speed of ultrasound with temperature.

In addition, for applications where fast response is critical, such as inlet or outlet open channel flow measurement to meet environmental agency requirements for example, an external temperature sensor can be used.
