DSP technology widens prospects for stepper drives
This article shows how the latest DSP (digital signal processing) technology has been exploited in a new generation of direct digitally controlled stepper drives.
Included in the starter pack is a Windows-based software package known as Nimbus, which provides the user with a very powerful and flexible environment for writing, debugging and commissioning Taranis programs.
It incorporates an editor which features automatic colour highlight of keywords and variables, as well as 'cut and paste' capabilities between multiple program windows, plain ASCII source text and extensive integrated software and hardware 'help' support.
A 9-way cable provides serial communication between the PC and the Taranis unit, while a plug-in board is used to simulate digital and analogue inputs and outputs.
Also included is programming tutorial documentation with application examples, plus SmartDrive's 'Smart Systems' CD which provides guidance on motor selection and systems integration.
Launched in March 2000, Taranis is a high-performance, low-cost stepper drive system based on a superfast digital signal processor (DSP) with dedicated peripheral functions.
The DSP system allows direct precision control of the motor current switching devices, with adaptive mathematical modelling providing accurate control of the winding current.
This results in very quiet, super-smooth motion, with over 3 million steps per revolution.
