The new agreement is the first step in a strategic alliance between the two companies, who will combine their product and engineering expertise to provide complete drive solutions - particularly in the precision scientific and laboratory markets.
Comments Dennis Murphy, Smartdrive's Managing Director: "In recent years, we have seen a big growth of interest in this sector, where our ability to generate ultrasmooth motion with microstepping technology offers a number of unique benefits in areas such as laboratory sample handling and positioning tables".
"Combining our DSP-based Taranis controller with Heidenhain's precision encoders - backed by the design and manufacturing expertise of both companies - means that together we are well placed to exploit these key technology markets", he added.
Heidenhain's encoder products are used in speed and position feedback applications, but apart from its own machine-tool CNC controls it does not supply motion control or drive systems - hence the need to involve companies like Smartdrive.
From Heidenhain, Stuart Jenkins, Sales Office Manager, said: "The need to develop such alliances has come from customers who, while they want fewer vendors, need to deal with people who can take responsibility for larger areas of their motion control applications.
Smartdrive has an excellent reputation and considerable experience in stepper drive systems, and with the addition of our full commercial and technical support we have confidence in involving them in major customer projects".
