SMC Pneumatics (UK) has recently launched a new electronic moving coil actuator Called the LA Series, the actuator has been developed to meet the demanding requirements of the automation environment, for speed, high accuracy, controllability and long life

The new LA electronic actuator is available in linear and rotary/linear configurations and is designed to operate independently in two servo axis - Z and Theta.

A dedicated controller is available, with SMC anticipating typical installations for the LA actuator to be primarily in pick, place, check and orient operations, in applications throughout the semi-conductor, electronic, automotive, medical and process control industries.

The compact, easy mount moving coil actuator features a precision machined body with doweled mounting surfaces.

The actuator is available in stroke lengths of up to 100mm and is capable of operating at speeds ranging from 0.005mm/sec to 1000mm/sec, making it equally suitable for both low and high speed applications.

The new actuator uses the established principle of moving coil technology combined with a permanent magnet which, with a low moving mass of 250g maximum, is capable of generating programmable forces over a wide range, from 0.3 up to 100N, at accelerations of up to 5G.

A 0.005mm (5 micron) resolution linear encoder is incorporated in the actuator build as standard, with a 0.001mm (1 micron) resolution option available.

Run-out of the actuator rod is less than 0.05mm over stroke, with end of stroke sensors fitted, also as standard.

In addition, for linear plus rotary applications, a multi-turn servo motor is available, which is accurate to 0.07deg.

By continuously monitoring the actuator position and force exerted during operation, it is possible to perform an operation and simultaneously confirm that the operation has been fully completed within predetermined force requirements.

To ensure optimum longevity, contact surfaces in the LA actuator are reduced to a minimum, with high grade bearings and precision linear guides used throughout.

The axis controller, available with the actuator, has been specially developed to provide dedicated programmable control of position, speed, acceleration and force.

Additionally, it can be programmed with a variety of set-point windows that allow closed loop monitoring of actuator performance during operations.

The controller is designed to operate either as a stand alone device in simple applications or, communicating with a higher level control system, via an RS232C interface.

The new LA moving coil actuator has full CE approval.

The LA moving coil actuator is produced in the USA by SMAC, with marketing and distribution in the UK by SMC Pneumatics (UK) Limited.
